Scott County, MinnesotaScott County

Scott County was first inhabited by the Mdewakanton and Wahpeton bands of the Sioux (Dakota) Indians.  The county as it is known today was established by an act of the Minnesota Legislature on March 5, 1853, and the county was named after General Winfield Scott, commanding general of the United States Army from 1841 to 1861.  General Scott was known as “Old Fuss and Feathers” for his emphasis on proper military etiquette.  The first European settlers were Yankees, and were followed by Germans, Irish, Czechs, and Scandinavians at various period of European emigration.  Most settlers became farmers, but fur trading, lumbering, and other agrarian work was popular as well.  Shakopee, the county seat, was established in 1851 as a major trading post by the Dakota Village of Chief Shakopee (or Shakpay) – thus the city’s name.  Today, Scott County is a mix of rural and suburban communities.  Its cities are continually growing, with a population increase of over 150,000 between 2000 and today.  Scott County is one of Minnesota’s fastest-growing counties.  The communities we serve in Scott  County include:
